The other dimension of weighing

Industrial weighing: weighing systems and load cells for industry

Industrial weighing forms the cornerstone of operational performance across numerous sectors, from food processing to logistics. Far more than a simple mass measurement, integrating high-precision weighing systems optimizes production flows. It relies on a unique dual expertise in the market: absolute mastery of static process weighing and the high technical standards of in-motion vehicle weighing. As a longstanding French manufacturer, Captels has been designing and manufacturing its own weighing sensors, load cells, and measurement solutions since 1985. This technological mastery delivers the precision and robustness required for the most demanding industrial environments, ensuring the measurement reliability and repeatability essential for modern traceability.

What is industrial weighing?

Industrial weighing refers to the range of techniques and devices used to accurately measure forces or masses within an industrial environment. It relies on weight sensors (load cells) that convert a mechanical force into an electrical signal that can be processed by a measurement system or process control system.

Beyond simple static or dynamic measurement, understanding modern industrial weighing involves visualizing the data journey—from the physical structure right through to overall plant management.

Anatomy of an industrial weighing system

Load Cell

Positioned beneath silos, vessels, or axle weighers, it converts the mechanical stress exerted by the mass into a high-precision analogue electrical signal.

Indicator

It amplifies, digitises, and converts the electrical signal from the sensor to transmit it instantly via advanced industrial protocols to control systems.

Automation

The programmable logic controller (PLC) receives real-time weight data to directly manage industrial processes, dosing operations, and filling valves.

ERP / MES / WMS / SCADA

The central IT system consolidates data to ensure rigorous inventory management, optimize overall logistics, and guarantee complete traceability.

The different types of industrial weighing systems

Industrial weighing solutions: systems and weight sensors

Selecting a weighing technology depends directly on the nature of the load to be measured and the traffic/flow constraints of your site. Modern infrastructures generally combine two major families of solutions to cover all operational requirements.

Industrial axle and wheel weighers

Designed for logistics flow management, these systems measure the mass of vehicles and mobile equipment. Available in both static and mobile (portable) configurations, they adapt seamlessly to your site layouts. Used for static or dynamic weighing, they allow operators to verify axle loads or gross vehicle weight in order to prevent overloads, optimize truck fill rates, and secure material transport without slowing down industrial traffic flow.

Load cells and weight sensors

Engineered to transform any structure into a rigorous measurement system, these sensors integrate directly into the heart of your production equipment. They are specifically sized for weighing silos, tanks, hoppers, reactors, or mixers. Depending on mechanical constraints and environmental factors (vibrations, extreme temperatures, corrosive products), we install compression, shear, or tension load cells to ensure accurate inventory tracking.

Industrial weighing and sensor expertise

A weighing sensor (or load cell) is a transducer that converts a mechanical force or mass into a measurable electrical signal. Under the effect of weight, the sensor's spring element undergoes a minute mechanical deformation, measured by electrical strain gauges to generate the weight data.

Both terms refer to the exact same component: the sensing element that transforms a force into an electrical signal. “Load cell” is the historical technical designation, while “weighing sensor” or “weight sensor” is in common everyday usage. At Captels, we use them interchangeably.

Static weighing measures a stationary load (silo, vessel, stopped vehicle): it is the most accurate method. Dynamic weighing measures a load in motion (a vehicle driving over an axle weigher): it prioritizes throughput and traffic fluidity, providing an accuracy level suited for overload monitoring.

Yes. Captels dynamic axle weighers measure axle loads and gross vehicle weight while driving at low speed without stopping. It is the ideal solution for traffic flow control at warehouses, industrial sites, or quarry exits.

Selection relies on three criteria: the nature of the load (fixed structure or vehicle), the required accuracy (inventory management, dosing, overload monitoring), and the environment (ATEX, corrosion, extreme temperatures, vibrations). Our teams conduct an installation study to size the optimal solution.

In process weighing (silos, vessels), an accuracy of ±0.1% to ±0.5% of full scale is common under real operating conditions. In dynamic vehicle weighing, expect ±1% to ±2%, depending on travel speed and ground/surface quality.

Rigid connections (piping, walkways) that shunt part of the load, thermal expansion, wind forces on outdoor structures, vibrations from neighbouring machinery, and inaccurate initial calibration. Proper mechanical integration combined with appropriate digital filtering eliminates most of these effects.

Using mounting kits tailored to the structure (silo feet, vessel supports, pits for axle weighers), connected to an indicator or transmitter that communicates with the PLC or ERP via standard industrial protocols. Installation is typically carried out without prolonged production downtime.

A weighbridge weighs the entire vehicle while stationary on a large-scale platform, offering legal accuracy required for commercial trade transactions. An axle weigher, which is more compact and cost-effective, measures each axle individually—either statically or dynamically—to monitor total load and weight distribution.

A manufacturer controls the entire value chain: sensor sizing, mechanical design, electronics, and software. They can customize a product to meet non-standard constraints, guarantee long-term spare parts availability, and directly provide calibration as well as after-sales service (ASS).
